A dehumidifier is supposed to protect a home, not light it up. But that is what happened in a Portland house this past season, when a unit in the basement closet under the stairs overheated and caught fire. The flames stayed small, but the smoke did not, and by the time our crew arrived for fire damage restoration, soot had drifted into nearly every room. Here is how our team at Premier Restoration Partners brought it back.
How One Small Fire Fills a Whole House With Smoke
Smoke does not stay where the fire started. It rides the home’s air currents, slips under doors, and settles as soot on walls, ceilings, and everything you own. Here the basement closet was ground zero, but the crawlspace pressurized and pushed residue up through the floor system into the living space above.
Quick tip from our team: Soot is slightly acidic, so it keeps eating at surfaces the longer it sits. That is why smoke cleanup is a race, not a someday project, and why the IICRC S700 fire and smoke restoration standard exists.

Step One: Getting the Belongings Out Safely
Before we can clean a smoke-filled home, the contents have to come out. That protects the family’s things from more soot exposure and gives us clear access to every surface. We spent a full day packing room by room, boxing and tagging as we went:
- Formal living room and entrance first
- Living room and dining room
- Downstairs bedroom and upstairs spare bedroom
- Master bedroom and kitchen last
The next morning we loaded the truck with everything tagged. The items she needed cleaned went to our care and got delivered to her new address once they were ready. Whatever was too far gone went straight to the dumpster, so she never had to sort through the loss herself.
Cleaning the Structure From Top to Bottom
With the house empty, the real work began. Smoke residue clings to every surface, so our approach is complete, not spot cleaning. The crew ran a full sequence in each space:
- 100 percent HEPA vacuum on all surfaces
- 100 percent chemical sponge to lift soot from walls and ceilings
- Wet wipe on all electrical and plumbing fixtures
We started in the attic and worked through the upstairs bedrooms, bathrooms, and office. Then we moved down into the basement and crawlspace, where the smoke had pressurized tightest. The basement took the longest, with touch-ups along the crawlspace side and the storage closet before every window and corner passed. Our trucks stayed parked out front for days, because a whole-house smoke job is not something you rush.

Pulling the Hardwood Floor on the Main Level
Not everything can be cleaned in place. Because the crawlspace had pressurized, smoke residue worked its way up into the main-level hardwood, so the flooring had to go. Our crew handled the demo themselves, pulling the hardwood and underlayment, removing every nail, and vacuuming the subfloor clean. That kind of repairs and rebuilding work is why it helps to have one team carry a job from cleanup through reconstruction.
Knocking Out the Smoke Odor for Good
Cleaning gets rid of what you can see. Deodorization gets rid of what you can still smell. Once the whole house was 100 percent clean and the windows washed, we ran ozone treatment across the basement, main level, and upstairs, then pulled the machines once the cycle finished. Smoke odor hides in places a rag never reaches, and ozone chases it into the corners contact cleaning misses.

Fire and Smoke Damage FAQs
Can smoke damage really reach rooms far from the fire?
Yes. Smoke follows a home’s airflow and settles as soot in rooms nowhere near the source, including crawlspaces and attics. Even a small, contained fire can leave residue across a whole house. That is why full-home cleaning is often needed.
Why does flooring sometimes have to be removed after a fire?
When smoke pressurizes a crawlspace, residue can work up into the flooring above. It holds odor that surface cleaning cannot lift. Pulling the hardwood and underlayment is the cleaner, longer-lasting fix.
What is ozone treatment and why is it used?
Ozone treatment neutralizes lingering smoke odor that hides where cleaning rags never reach. We run it after surfaces are fully cleaned, then remove the equipment once the air is fresh again.
How fast should I act after fire or smoke damage?
As fast as you can. Soot is acidic and keeps damaging surfaces the longer it sits, and quick action often saves more of your belongings.
